Reflex or Transparent?

(Parts List for Typical Gage & Valve)

Use REFLEX style in clear liquids such as water, ammonia-refrigerant and light hydrocarbons because the liquid shows BLACK. Use TRANSPARENT style gage to see Liquid-Liquid inferface. Also to see color or suspended solids. Can be used with mica shields to protect glass from steam, caustic or other corrosion.

Reflex Glass shows BLACK in Liquid--
SILVERY WHITE in steam, gas, or air

Steam/Air/Gas
Liquid
Light bends when passing from glass to a less dense material such as liquid or air. At the air (or steam) boundary it bend so much as to be reflected off the 45° prisms back to the viewer and appears silvery-white, similar to a mirror. However it bends a lesser amount in the liquid — appearing dark as it enters the chamber. The silvery/black interface shows the true liquid level.
